Former Italian premier Romano Prodi has been tapped to chair a new United Nations advisory panel on peacekeeping in Africa, UN sources told ANSA Wednesday.
According to the sources, who spoke on condition of anonymity, Prodi will head up a group of experts appointed by the UN and the African Union.
The panel is set to start work next week, they said.
UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon is to telephone Prodi before making an official announcement, the sources added.
The sources spoke after several recent reports that Prodi was up for the job.
