Does anyone have a recommendation for a great, non-touristy restaurant in Bologna? We will be spending one day there before heading back to the States and would like to have a really memorable lunch.

We are contemplating starting to purchase euros with US dollars, in anticipation for an eventual house purchase in Italy, which could occur anytime we find a house within the next 5 years or so.

My husband and I are Americans who recently got our Italian citizenship through juris sanguinis. We plan on retiring to Italy in 5 years or so and are working on our retirement plan to ensure that we will not run out of funds in our lifetime.

I don't think it will be an easy task for you. There are a lot of highly qualified doctors. My husband graduated from the U. of Pisa Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and at the time we were only US citizens. It would have been quite difficult for him to practice there at that point. We do know of a few people who married an Italian and eventually were able to work there. We now have dual citizenship and my husband if fully quallified to work in Italy. I would google for information as well as contact one of the medical schools to see what you can find out. From my research, you are a fiscal resident if you reside in Italy one day more than half of the year, thus you would be subject to Italian taxes on your worldwide income/assets, including your home in the UK. We do know of several people from the UK who do not pay taxes in Italy but I think that the tax man will catch up with them at some point. We are US/Italian dual citizens and this will be our situation as well. I would recommend that you consult with a tax accountant who is well-versed in this issue but from the extensive reading that I have done as well as a recent contact I had with a tax accountant in Italy who prepares taxes for both countries, this is indeed the case.
While we are on the subject of wills, I have a guestion.My husband and I are dual citizens - USA/Italy, who will be moving to Italy next fall. We will be leaving the bulk of our assets - bank accounts, IRA's, investment accounts, in the US. We will buy a property in Italy once we find the right one. I was told by an Italian notaio in the US that it was best to keep things separate and to have our US assets in our US will. The notaio said that we do not need a will for our future house in Italy as it will automatically go to the surviving spouse as well as our children. Is this good advice?

You are right, it is very difficult coming from so far away, once a year for a few weeks, to try and find what we are looking for. If we don't this trip, we will rent in a year and hopefully find the right property.

Hi Ugo,Aeg did not get back to US until we were back in the US. As far as Monica, we had asked to see 2 specific houses and asked if there were others as well that she had for us to see. At the time, our budget was less as the dollar was very bad. Also, we are able to spend some more now that we have sold our business.One of the houses was not nice at all. The other we thought had possibilities. We brought a very good Italian builder back with us to see the one we thought could be promising and he pointed out something that we had not thought about. There was a very large hill right across the drive from the house and he told us that the house would be in the shadows and thus cold, until 11 in the morning. The agent was not pleased when he told us this and more or less wanted us to ignore our friend's advice. However, we saw the property about 7 years ago and it is still for sale, with a price of about 80,000 euros less than the original asking price, so obviously there is a problem! She did not make any attempt to show us anything else and did not seem interested in helping us. It seemed to us that unless you had a lot of money to spend, that she was not interested. We have heard from others that if she feels someone is not serious that she does not put in any effort.We know of other stories that are not good but I do not want to write them here.
