Hiwonder if anyone can help?we have a house near Amandola, Le Marche, and are looking for a traditional wood burning stove around 7kW output. All the ones we have seen appear to be a little bit too modern. I have found loads on UK websites but delivery to Italy costs nearly as much as the fires.

Our friends bought a wood burning stove in Amandola; don't remember the name of the shop, but as you drop down out of Amadola towards Ascoli there's a right turn, and the shop is up there on the left. Benefit also is that one of the guys speaks excellent English if you don't speak Italian. Our friends have found that even the small stove that they bought is very efficient.

If you do find something you like in the UK I suspect you should get another quote for transport.... I have had a few stufas and heat banks (for the stufas) coming from England and I expect the transport to come to around £300 ... try Hedleys Humpers or Grayline. As for stufa selection. I agree about the horrible modern ones and I also hate the poncy cast iron filligree on the mock old ones. Have a look at Clearview for a middle of the road approach.... the 12kw 650 with a 3kw back boiler leaves 11kw to the room and this works well if you open up the doors to let the hot air spill out. 3kw to the tank/heat bank doesn't sound much but actually it is so much that you have to dump heat into radiators or floors several times a day.PS. A cautionary tale.  We once had A****  move our small flat contents out here. Their quote was pretty competitive - they didn't even bother to come round and look - but when they had it all packed onto the truck they said it would come to a few hundred pounds more so as they now had it on board we had to swallow on that. Then after waiting for weeks and weeks for it to arrive - waiting for another delivery to tie in with - we were asked if our road was serviceable.  So panic panic... €4,500 later a nice bit of concrete went in. Eventually one dark evening a call came from the truck driver and I drove out to see something like the QE2 on wheels, with lights down the side. There was no way this thing could even turn into our gate so they drove 12km down to Umbertide just to turn round and the next day we had to get help to ferry the load down. The helpers had to be paid of course and we were billed for that too. It would have been cheaper to have burnt everything in England.

Sagraiasolar's cautionary tale reminded me of a friends experience with furniture removers. After long delays getting the furniture shipped, the final cost exceeded the value of the furniture, and when it arrived they found that it did not suit their italian home and ended up getting rid of most of it and buying new here.Anyway, the reason for my post is to pass on the latest charges I have been charged for shipping woodburners from the UK.In September I imported a number of stoves including wood burners with back boilers to the Puglia region for customers. The shipping charges on the invoices from September were:160.00 GBP for a 225kg unit's, and 100.00 for a 115kg unit's.Prices can fluctuate greatly between suppliers, but these are the lowest costs I have had this year.If any one would like further information or advice, I will be only too happy to pass details / links etc for the companies involed. RegardsSteveW

Steve, It's good to hear that there is some stufa expertise in Puglia. Could you tell us a bit about that ...  you never know, we might have some synergies in heat banks etc.  Just out of interest; I've been running my stove this morning seeing as it was 3c outside and the heat bank is over 70c now. The sun is out and the solar panel pump is running at the same time... great to have the two cheapest energy sources running simultaneously.

thanks all for your help.Andrew,I wonder if your shop on the way to Ascoli out of Amandola is the same one described by AnneC? Anyway, We`ll give it a try. You dont say whether they sell traditionalin style (not the poncy cast iron ones with "filigree")Do you know what kind of price I would expect to pay?

Sorry can't help an more than the previous info; we just happened to be in Amadola one day (we live near Ascoli) and spotted our friend's UK plated Discovery. Having not seen them for some time we scouted around and found them in the stuffa shop. They had done their homework to find a particular stove, and visiting their house a few weeks later found the item installed and giving it some large. The heat inside their small property was incredible given that this little thing is just that; small but very efficient and nicely formed in a traditional way.If you would like me to I'll ask our friends permission to pass on their contact details. They live near Magliano di Tenna AP.

Yesterday went to Citta delle Stelle to do the 'big shop', and outside the brico were quite a few wood burning stoves on show; mostly very small but nicely formed. None were particularly unpleasant in their appearance; simple and; repeat; nicely formed.

We didn't go for a wood burner in the end as we have underfloor heating but we did get all the tiles for the house and bathroom supplies (for 5 bathrooms) from Stefano -as well as speaking very good English he has a great selection (too much choice!) and great prices (and doesn't try to push you into expensive choices)Chris

guys you have both been most helpful. Ithink I`ll try Stefanos first as its closest. On our last trip over in September someone we met mentioned a place which sells great tiles just out of Amandola on route to Ascoli (must be Stefanos), needless to say, we couldnt fing it. Dont want to be a pain in the bum, but do you have detailed directions?

HiVia A Biondi 33Directions from main square.  Go out of the main square towards Comunanza, down the hill past the shops.  When you get to the bottom of the hill the main road bends round to the left.  Bar Stazzioni is on the corner ahead.  Via Biondi is straight on - go past the Conad on the left and the shop is a bit further along on the left. Chris

. . I'd say that Jepsonclough 's directions are spot-on, except that you need to take a definite RIGHT before the Bar Stazione - towards Montefortino.  Then Stefano's is on the left after the Conad and as described by Sprostoni PS - Sebastiano says elsewhere on this site that he's got a 25% discount sale on at the mo

John, the shop everyone is giving you directions to is well known to us, he has grown very rich from selling to English folk, and is not quite so popular with a lot of Italians. However, he does speak English, and has a good range of stock, and tiles. I would say, don't give him the idea you are "loaded" or you will not get a discounted price. If you sound a bit doubtful, the price may well come down !!!He has the monopoly on Stoves just around here, but I got a lovely French wood burner 6 years ago from Passo San Ginesio, very good discount included fitting.About tiles, theres an excellent range at Ponte Maglio, 30 mins. from Amandola, and in case you need light fittings, or small repairs, GIBAS, on Amandola,s Pian di Contro, has huge stock and friendly service, (hidden to right of Coal supermarket )Hope this is a help to you, good luck ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,carolina

Gibas have great lights but for the nice ones they are incredibly expensive - we were advised to go there and we did by a few lights in the sale but many were around €500+ which for us (tyring to kit out a whole house) was prohibitively expensive.Chris

Thanks guyswhen we shopped for light s for our place we were shocked by prices in some shops so went to Ikea, luckily, we only needed a few.Carolina   -   Thanks for the advice on log burners. Dont worry, he wont be able to sniff money on us! ( we aint got any!!) Judging by the other comments, he sounds like a bit of a Del Boy. I`ve come to the conclusion that we English definitely pay more for most things in Italy, nearly every day when we are shopping for stuff we often wonder how on earth locals are able to live. Answer: 2 prices!! I think that most retailers must have a "foreigner detector" hidden in the shop. Having said all that, we have been into some places and been treated ok as regards price / service.Do you have directions for the shop in Passo San Ginesio? Also, whats the name of the place which sells tiles at Ponte Maglio?

Hi John, th3e info you wanted - - - -Woodburner,     EDILNOVA,                            62020 SANT'ANGELO IN PONTANO,Contrada Passo, 58. Very easy to find, on right, before traffic lights on road from Sarnarno to Macerata. nice friendly people, and speak English.Tile place,,,,,,,, ..,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,CASCAROLI,take Pedaso road from Comunanza, and its just through Ponte Maglio, on right, set back from road.Sorry my directions not too good, and rubbish typing !Good luck !!                                                                                   carolina

I really dont think it is fair to apply the 2 prices theory to all Italians, and what you are saying is effectivley they are cheating you which is not a pleasant thought for the natives of a country you choose to live in. This has never been the case for us, we have always been treated fairly, and  anyway, in most cases prices are clearly displayed for all to see.Perhaps it might help if your Italian is not fluent enough to be understood for large purchases take someone else along who can translate for you. Then misunderstandinga can be avoided.A
