What passes for a granita in the north is a mix of vile chemicals. In the south, they are real fruit/almond/coffee etc. The one time I tried a 'granita' in Florence, they tried to foist what tasted like frozen cough mixture onto me. And they dont do a caffè freddo! Are you sure it wasnt some trendy aperativo - they come in vibrant colours.

Yes, I was expecting a sophisticated aperativo. I've seen loads of people sipping at these colourful drinks and they are not children. The pink/green/blue drinks are served in medium sized plain glasses, look pale and translucent - no bits and pieces floating about - and are sipped rather than swigged.
