There is a hugely important element to the manovra published yesterday. For people who took residence in Italy to get prima casa, but dont actually live here...From 2012 you will pay 7/1000 on the value of any property owned OUTSIDE ITaly.

Does anyone have any info on the scudo fiscale.  It seems that the new version is not only retroactive, but anyone bringing money into Italy could be liable for 5% tax if they are resident.

The disaster in the province of Messina goes to prove the instability and 'eyes wide shut' approach to living in Italy.

I wasnt lambasting you - just making the point that alot of people think it doesnt matter, but it is important to know what you are doing.  So, if you've already done the atto you have 18 months to take up residence or not.  If you decide that 16 months in you arent going to, you need to go to the AGenzia dell'Entrate and tell them.  They will tell you how much you have to pay, and that's that.  If you wait till they get you after the 18 month period, you will have to pay a 30% surcharge as a fine.   The agency will have been misleading because most dont either know or care about your situation - strangely its easier for non European citizens to get elective residency than Europeans who automatically become resident - and here there is a typical Catch 22 situation as a European citizen must technically take residnce if they stay in Italy for more than 3 months, but fiscally its more than 183 days a year.  If you stay for 4 months at a time you land in a grey area which the comunes are at a loss to deal with.  Yes, to buy a car you would have to be a resident so if a car is indispensible then it adds weight to your argument about taking residency.  AS a nonresident you will be paying more for IMU with no deductions that a prima casa buyer would have, but you will get a deduction on your rubbish tax (TARES) which a resident wont get.    You have time to weigh up all the pros and cons and do some informed calculations and then you can decide what you need to do.

It's only fair to point out that it is a Souht American Nobel prize winner that points the finger at the Pope for effectively handing over priests to the fascist junta.  And no, i have no idea what went on, but I thought the point of being a devout Christian was to stick up for whats right - see martyrs.   I dont have any point of view on the Falklands/malvinas  but siding with the potty president of Argentina over who they belong to (is it any business of the Church?) will just inflame the current controversy, and lead to another futile invasion, when the residents have voted by 99.7% to remain British.  I know its all about oil and sidtracking public interest in things that really matter, but for a priest/cardinal/Pope to inflame an already dangerous argument is irresponsible.  I saw the mission - nice music.  I dont doubt he is a devout Jesuit and has taken his vows of poverty, chastity and obedience - so lets hope he makes the rest of the Vatican do the same - ethically and morally however he seems defiantly stuck in the 15 century - if the best he can offer is deigning to baptise illegitimate babies, he still has a long way to go to become what Jesus taught was a christian.

If you say in your act of purchase that you want to take advantage of the prima casa tax break etc etc according to the DPR 2000 and so on - only to save money, it is a flase declaration in a public act - which is illegal - it is technically perjury.  under  the new laws, (exactly the same as not declaring your estate agent and their fees for example) this can lead to a fine of up to 15000 euros, the sequestration of your property anda jail term of up to 3 years.  There is no 'come on' about it - someone has to say exactly what the situation is - and as an agent I can be sued if I dont.... Obviously everyone chooses what they want to do, but best to do it in an informed way.

So 'we' have a new pope for 24 hours, and thus far its all been how very very 'umble he is.   Translate that into some action - such as give away some of the church's billions to the poor, and Ill believe he isnt just another hypocrite.  IN the meantime we have learnt he remained steadfastly silent during the fascist junta, and firmly believes the Falklands are Argentinian - so could well be responsible for a future war and hundreds of deaths of innocent men. Don'tyalove'em....

its illegal.  If you make a load of promises and then commit perjury in some cases, in order to save some money you can get fined, lose your property and be deported.

You are either a resident or not.  Permanent residence only comes into play after 5 years.  SO you are confusing your local comune.  Tey will give you residence if you are intending to live here for more than half the year, and therefore cut ties with the UK (fiscally).

Grillo is the m5s and that is the problem.  They are indistingishible, precisely cos grillo wants them to be.  I have alot of tiem for grillo and what he wants to do, but i just think that sometimes he hasnt got a clue.  You cant have a political party that is not a party but a movement where everyone has equal say, and the expel people cos they dont agree with you.  Hat way madness lies.

Dont spend less than 400 euros because itll be rubbish.  Get petrol and at least 4hp.   You can get a 'bike chain' attachment now which are good for branbles or a disk- dont bother with nylon for brambles.  Better still get a donkey and a goat
