If you have property in UK you might contemplate redirecting your mail to Italy during your sojourn. Please be aware that the mail people, despite you paying quite a lot of money might mistakenly send your mail from your bank back to the bank.

We have a number of external walls about a metre high, cement rendered on both sides and made of tufo blocks. Sadly the rendering keeps getting spalled off after the winter due to, I think water in the walls freezing and expanding.

Birmingham UK area with 95% dead yuccas this spring plus lots of ceanothus dead and indeed anything a bit tender, however I was not expecting more or less similar here in Lazio, the main victims seem to have been date palms , even well-established

Looking at a courtyard in Umbria I saw a tradescanthia plant, the one sometimes non-pc called wandering Jew. Got hold of a couple and potted up on my terrace in Lazio and lo and behold they thrive mightily.

For the tech experts - can I use a UK gas oven in Italy attached to a supply from one of those big cylinders in the garden? I am thinking of bringing one out. In anticipation - thanks.

Agree to as many windows open as possible altho' mozzy nets over them will prevent ingress of bugs. Beware of anything being close to the walls , eg pictures, wardrobes, curtains , hangings as where there is stagnant air there you will get condensation and damage to walls and fittings Hope problem sorts itself out eventually.

The best proxy servers are not free and free ones have a reputation for disappearing without warning etc. Either way there are question marks over their legitimacy. Also the first part of this thread looks a bit like an advert to me. Is this allowed?

The word "shower" can be a bit of a misnomer as usually there is simply an increase in the rate of sightings but very pretty none-the-less. Not too sure about the 2am bit mind!

Here it is folks - the definitive anti-mozzy advice fron an ex-pharmacist. Things that don't work: Vitamin B Marmite Little electrical devices that emit high-pitched noises Eating garlic Things that don't work very well: Citronella oil and other aromatic oils Burning candles Things that work well: DEET as a repellent - don't inhale when spraying and it will dissolve the surface of plastics! Best treatment: 1% hydrocortisone cream massaged in gently as soon as possible after being bitten and repeated twelve hours later if necessary. Toothpaste, bicarb, hairgel etc etc will only give very temporary relief at best Important Against all your instincts read the product information and follow it!

Bring a fully documented and UK legal car either taking 4 days staying at Reims, Luzern and Parma or go motorail to Alessandria with either Dutch or German rail - nice service and clean. The perfidious French no longer offer Calais to Rome motorail - Ah the good old days! There's nothing terrifying about driving on the "wrong" side and please ensure your insurance co. covers you for time spent abroad. Saga offer a very long term foreign use. Remember to re-discover your left wing mirror you're going to need it! Even the Italians have a very complex job buying a second-hand car!

Thanks for the interest folks and I am right with you re spider plants. bought 2 at a church fete in uk and now rampant and healthy on the terrace. As for nasturtiums the ones without the spur not v good but the usual one v good provided all seeds and faded leaves removed! Any other suggestions for Italian winter hardy plants as sure-fire winners?

Answer to: going fishing

my neighbour goes fishing but I think the Italian approach is a bit different to our sporting method. He uses bright yellow plastic maggots for trout not delicately constructed flies, wonder if it's legal?

Do not take your car in, park at end of metro line eg Anagnina and go in that way or by train Visit San Clemente church and go beneath the church to amazing excavations Favourite church - The Gesu - magnificent Villa Giulia - beautiful and amazing etruscan gold jewellery Do not take valuables in to Rome and never keep wallet etc in back pocket - beware pickpockets when boarding/alighting metro and buses partic no. 64. Drink frequently at water taps constantly running NOT from fountains There's always more to see
