If you have property in UK you might contemplate redirecting your mail to Italy during your sojourn. Please be aware that the mail people, despite you paying quite a lot of money might mistakenly send your mail from your bank back to the bank.

We have a number of external walls about a metre high, cement rendered on both sides and made of tufo blocks. Sadly the rendering keeps getting spalled off after the winter due to, I think water in the walls freezing and expanding.

Birmingham UK area with 95% dead yuccas this spring plus lots of ceanothus dead and indeed anything a bit tender, however I was not expecting more or less similar here in Lazio, the main victims seem to have been date palms , even well-established

Looking at a courtyard in Umbria I saw a tradescanthia plant, the one sometimes non-pc called wandering Jew. Got hold of a couple and potted up on my terrace in Lazio and lo and behold they thrive mightily.

For the tech experts - can I use a UK gas oven in Italy attached to a supply from one of those big cylinders in the garden? I am thinking of bringing one out. In anticipation - thanks.

Rejoice with me for at last ENEL have recognised that I AM resident and therefore qualify for a lower tariff and wait for this ... they have back-dated my benefits to the initial application about three years ago! Oh joy!.

I guess there must be a rule of the road as in Uk but the other way around if you know what I mean but local experience teaches me to be VERY careful of what the other driver will do at a roundabout as some of the things I have seen would make your hair stand on end!, oh and NOBODY signals at  a roundabout.

Yes of course I am talking about pelargoniums, silly me, and I am afraid the said butterfly is argus sized but is an alien species which has multiplied hugely and is now the commonest butterfly in the Rome area and due to its devastating effects on pelargoniums is not on my list of protectable species!

Bit confusing this. You might be stricken with condensation on those cold concrete walls so the plumbers advice for moving the warm air around is a good one but of course you will use more gas Warm moist air from the cooking wont help so an extractor to the outside over the cooker would be a good thing. Good luck!

Basically if you can't keep them cool and dark they won't keep and as for supermarket spuds keep them in paper (not poly) in as reasonably cool darkish place in the kitchen as possible. Theoretically if they go green you could be poisoned!

Interesting stuff about your trip to Lazio Sud and you do have a point about the translation or lack of it and I do agree about the graffiti etc. The graffiti and the habit of using the road sides as rubbish bins is appalling and it's time the Italians woke up to this, however the rudeness of the Indian lads rang bells with me - I think it more likely they were dark skinned lads from down South doing the old hustle the foreigners when getting on or off the bus/train trick whilst attempting to pick your pockets. Even bum-bags are not immune to this, was it on a 64 Bus? I hope they did not get anything.Southern Lazio is great, I live here and we have frequent guests and they love it too but it IS hot in mid-summer, my favourite month is May for sight- seeing etc., give it a try!

Answer to: TV set from UK
Sat, 08/29/2009 - 16:43

I think I am right in saying that as far as analogue TV goes then UK and Italy both use PAL but they are different versions (something to do with the separation in frequencies betwen sound and vision) Now where that leaves us viz a vis  digital I am not sure.

Dont put the emulsion on wood tho', Castorama is the best bet but there are specialist paint shops out there as well and ours is very helpful. A good ferramenta can be a good and wondrous thing too.

Thu, 08/27/2009 - 17:44

Yes of course! find all the churches on a map and connect them up and you will be startled how many ley lines will be created, mind you if you connect up all the ferramentas or ice cream shops you will get the same result! Mind you I think I am getting a bit old and cynical (?)
