If you have property in UK you might contemplate redirecting your mail to Italy during your sojourn. Please be aware that the mail people, despite you paying quite a lot of money might mistakenly send your mail from your bank back to the bank.

We have a number of external walls about a metre high, cement rendered on both sides and made of tufo blocks. Sadly the rendering keeps getting spalled off after the winter due to, I think water in the walls freezing and expanding.

Birmingham UK area with 95% dead yuccas this spring plus lots of ceanothus dead and indeed anything a bit tender, however I was not expecting more or less similar here in Lazio, the main victims seem to have been date palms , even well-established

Looking at a courtyard in Umbria I saw a tradescanthia plant, the one sometimes non-pc called wandering Jew. Got hold of a couple and potted up on my terrace in Lazio and lo and behold they thrive mightily.

For the tech experts - can I use a UK gas oven in Italy attached to a supply from one of those big cylinders in the garden? I am thinking of bringing one out. In anticipation - thanks.

Rejoice with me for at last ENEL have recognised that I AM resident and therefore qualify for a lower tariff and wait for this ... they have back-dated my benefits to the initial application about three years ago! Oh joy!.

Seems to me that having your house looking like Goonhilly Down is too big a price to pay for a bit of British telly. Why not if broadband is available and you have a UK house use a slingbox or (whisper it quietly) use a proxy server, the better ones DO charge tho'.

I am ( I hope) getting to the final stages of arranging tariff for resident status so will this new tariff be open to anybody resident or non-resident?

And be pleasant to him and then when you present your BC to him just point out the number and tell him it is unique and your place of birth is here then with a bit of luck all will be well, worth a try anyway!

Not by my experience! Numerous phone calls, faxes and help from my Italian friend Roberto have so far not achieved this feat. I have sent two copies of my residency certificata, copies of my ID card, I have purchased a franca di bollo and stuck it on my certifcata as requested (15 Euros!) and then had to do allt the same for my wife (why?) and the latest ploy is to tell us that the original account is not our address! ( strange how they manage to collect the bill money). A self certiication form has been filled out and duly sent away. Will this work ?, who knows?

Answer to: Olives per tree

Yes 6 euros a litre in Lazio is normal but you do know it is yours and not blended with other oils. This year - not so many olives and a little fly damage but overall not bad quality - the proof will be in the pressing!Looking after olives is not as difficult as the Italians would have us believe and if you're fit can be the only way you can make a little money out of them.

Welcome to S Lazio, we live near Palestrina for 6 months per year and I am always a bit mystified as to why non-Italians are so thin on the ground. Suggested places to visit might be Fiuggi with its pretty lake nearby, Subiaco with Santo Speco monastery, Certosa, Olevano,  and lots of others including of course Rome possibly less than an hour away, not forgetting the proximity of Ciampino airport as an advantage for the budget traveller! Personally I consider the countryside of the Ciociaria to be superior to Tuscany - certainly much greener. And finally I find the locals very welcoming with sensible prices in the many family-run restaurants.

I'm with the gaggers, Romans used to eat it when there was nothing else and a local butcher used to have a sign up "TRIPA OFFERTA" for ten years to my knowledge!

If you have broadband connection go to BBC site and you can have instant radio four etc and if you do not then you can have quality world service from hotbird satellite, personally I prefer Euronews on the telly.

Olives this year in Lazio not v good but mine not too bad however the eating variety has been a complete wash-out and I have noticed different varieties have performed less well than others but so far the dreaded olive fly not too much in evidence. Apples and pears not good, plums poor, peaches OK and yes Figs great!
